Tungsten Halogen lamps

Question:
What are the advantages of Halogen lamps vis a vis lamps for general use?

Answer:
  • Compactness
  • No glass blackening
  • Longer life duration
  • Higher degree of effectiveness

Question:
Can Halogen lamps be operated with direct current?

Answer: Halogen lamps can, in principal. be operted both on direct current and alternating current.

As the life span is practically only is derived from the temperature of the coil and this again is determined by the median performance uptake of the lamp, there are no considerable differences in the burning period reaction.

Question:
How are the technical light levels changed with the dimming of halogen lamps?

Answer:
A change of voltage on 5% dimming has the following effect:
  • Half, resp. double the life span
  • 15 % change of light power
  • Longer life duration
  • 8 % change of performance
  • 3 % change of current
  • 2 % change of colour temperature

Question:
Can halogen lamps be operated in serial circuit?

Answer:
Serial circuiting for halogen-NV lamps is not recommended. The electric current flowing through the individual lamp is not determined by the individual lamp, but through the total resistance of the row of lamps. In this process those lamps are operated with overload, which - with constant provision voltage - gives a lower efficiency uptake

Consequence:
Shortened life span!

Question:
Is it true that at the end of the life span of halogen lamps there occurs a power impulse in the lamp?

Answer:
Yes, it occurs with all lamps, independently of the manufacturer, with low voltage as well as with mains voltage lamps.

With low voltage of 24 volts and with mains voltage lamps a fine fuse on the secundary side is layed down by law; which should safeguard at least 50 % above the specifiable power!

Question:
Which type of dimmer is suitable for which HALOTRONIC?

Answer:
HALOTRONIC are dimmable with all trailing edge phase control dimmers.

HTM 70 and 105 are dimmable with leading edge (for inductive loads) and trailing edge phase control dimmers.

Question:
Is there any maximum permitted cable length on the secondary side of HALOTRONIC?

Answer:
The maximum permitted cable length between lamp and transformer is limited to 2m. The reason, among other things, is to comply with radio interference limit values.

This means that lamps can be installed within a circle of 4 meters diameter from the transformer.

Question:
Is it possible to loop the mains with HALOTRONIC?

Answer:
The L- and LF-versions have two pairs of terminals on the primary side.

Therefore it is possible to loop the mains.

Question:
What happens if the load is below the rated power range?

Answer:
An instable operation can occur if the load on the transformer is below its rated power range. Possibly, the harmonics or the level of radio interfreence are above the permitted limits. The transformer and the lamp are not in danger to be damaged due to an underload operation.

Question:
How can the output voltage of HALOTRONIC be mesasured?

Answer:
An instrument for secondary voltage measurement must be able to mesure the true RMS value and have a range of > 250kHz (-3dB).

Any other instruments will give incorrect results.

Question:
Is it possible to reduce the values of the radio interference by using shielde cables on the secondary side ?

Answer:
No, especially the conducted radio interference cannot be reduced with a shielded cable.
